A childcare outdoor environment should recognise that babies, toddlers and older children experience space differently. For babies, ground-level sensory experiences matter. Texture, shade, gentle movement, planting, sound, opportunities to crawl and safe contact with natural materials can make the environment engaging without relying on conventional equipment.

Toddlers need movement and repetition

Toddlers are developing balance, coordination and independence. Low climbing, slopes, pushing, pulling, carrying, sand, water and simple routes can support repeated practice and growing confidence.

Equipment age guidance matters, but the overall developmental environment is broader. Consider agency, sensory experience, social play, nature, movement and opportunities to manipulate the environment.

Design around the service’s actual operating model

Room locations, group sizes, rostering, transitions and supervision arrangements should inform how outdoor zones connect. A layout that works for one centre may not suit another even with the same licensed capacity.
