How can drainage problems be solved in childcare outdoor areas?
Drainage problems in childcare yards should be addressed by understanding where the water comes from, how it moves across the site and where it can legally and practically be managed.
Simply replacing the visible surface may hide a problem without solving it.

Why can childcare drainage be challenging?
Childcare yards are often relatively constrained. They can sit between buildings, boundaries, verandahs, play structures and paved areas, which can concentrate runoff into a comparatively small outdoor space.
Poor drainage can contribute to:
- ponding
- mud
- erosion
- damaged turf
- unusable play areas
- deterioration of landscape materials
The cause needs to be established before the solution is selected.
What might a drainage solution involve?
Depending on the site and the relevant approvals, a professionally designed solution might use a combination of:
- corrected surface falls
- appropriate pits or drains
- subsoil drainage
- permeable areas
- improved soil conditions
- drainage layers beneath particular surfaces
- management of runoff from adjoining areas
Not every technique is appropriate for every property. Hydraulic, civil, landscape or other specialist input may be required where the drainage problem is significant.
What about synthetic grass?
Synthetic grass can form a useful finished surface over a properly constructed, free-draining base. Its underlying profile can also be shaped to create controlled surface falls.
But synthetic grass is not itself a drainage system.
Water still needs an appropriate pathway through or across the construction and a suitable discharge strategy.
Why solve drainage before redesigning the yard?
Because drainage influences almost everything above it. Plant health, natural turf, surfacing, sand areas, paths and equipment zones can all be affected by persistent water problems.
Resolving the underlying issue gives the rest of the landscape a better chance of performing properly.
