How do you create a nature play space at a school?
Nature play at school is not simply adding logs, rocks and plants to a playground. A successful nature play environment uses natural materials, landscape, loose elements and changing experiences to give students more ways to explore, imagine, move, create and interact with the natural world.

What makes a space genuinely nature based?
Nature play works best when natural elements are part of the experience rather than decoration around conventional equipment. Trees, planting, sand, soil, water, rocks, logs, landform, gardens and loose natural materials can all contribute.
The strongest environments also change over time. Plants grow, leaves fall, water moves, materials can be rearranged and children discover different uses for the same place. That variability is one of the qualities that distinguishes nature play from highly prescribed play.
Combine nature with challenge and movement
Natural does not have to mean passive. Level changes, balancing, scrambling, climbing, stepping, digging and moving through varied terrain can create rich physical challenge.
The key is to design the landscape and play opportunities together. A log can be a balance element, a gathering edge or part of imaginative play. A planted mound can create movement, enclosure, prospect and a different way to experience the site.
Connect nature play to learning
Nature-rich school grounds can extend learning beyond scheduled playground use. Gardens, habitat areas, sensory planting, water systems and material exploration can support observation, inquiry, science, sustainability and creative learning.
This is most effective when outdoor learning is considered during design. A beautiful natural area that cannot comfortably accommodate a class, be supervised or be maintained may be used less than expected.
Use risk benefit thinking
Good nature play contains challenge, and challenge should be considered deliberately rather than designed out automatically. Australian playground guidance recognises the importance of managing risk while preserving the developmental value of stimulating play.
That means understanding foreseeable hazards, the abilities of the intended users, fall conditions, circulation and supervision, then making proportionate design decisions. The goal is not a risk-free environment. It is an environment in which worthwhile challenge is thoughtfully managed.
Design for maintenance from the beginning
Natural environments need a realistic maintenance strategy. Plant selection, irrigation, drainage, mulch, loose materials, timber durability and the intensity of student use all matter.
A nature play space should become better as it establishes, not steadily deteriorate because the maintenance burden was underestimated. Robust planting, clear edges, sensible material choices and access for maintenance should be part of the design brief.
Avoid the ‘nature play corner’ problem
One common mistake is isolating nature play into a small themed corner while the rest of the playground remains disconnected from it. Where the site allows, natural qualities should influence the broader environment through shade, planting, landform, material choice and movement.
The result feels like a landscape for children rather than a playground with nature added afterwards.
