Playform for Architects and Consultants

Complete school outdoor environments without the usual design lag

When you are designing a school, the outdoor environment cannot be treated as an equipment schedule or an unresolved allowance. It contributes to how students move, learn, play and connect, and to how successfully the wider campus works each day.

The challenge is that resolving a complete playspace from first principles can create another substantial design stream within an already complex project. Briefing, concept development, equipment selection, landscape integration, compliance, costing and redesign can consume time while critical project decisions remain open.

Playform offers a more resolved starting point.

ULP has brought the essential parts of a successful school outdoor environment together into a collection of complete, thoughtfully designed, pre-costed and construction-ready solutions. Architects and consultants can nominate Playform knowing the school is not receiving a collection of disconnected products. It is receiving a cohesive environment designed to balance play, learning, movement, social connection, supervision, durability and everyday use.

This protects the quality of the outcome while removing much of the usual design lag.

A complete environment, not an equipment selection

Many school playspaces begin with a list of equipment. The landscape, circulation, seating, planting, learning opportunities and social use are then resolved around those individual components, often by different parties and at different stages.

Playform takes the opposite approach. Each Playform is conceived as a complete outdoor environment in which the parts have already been considered together.

For the architect, this creates confidence that the nominated playspace has design intent behind it. It has been developed as a balanced landscape outcome rather than assembled as a catalogue response. The school can see what it is considering, the project team has a clearer basis for coordination and the design does not need to begin again from a blank page.

Why nominate Playform in a school project?

Protect the quality of the wider design

The playspace may represent only one part of the school project, but it has an outsized influence on daily student life and the experience of the campus.

Nominating Playform gives the project a considered outdoor environment that can sit confidently within the wider architectural vision. It reduces the risk of the playspace becoming a late collection of equipment selected primarily around remaining budget, programme pressure or incomplete documentation.

Reduce design lag

The core Playform design has already been developed, coordinated and costed. Instead of initiating another open-ended concept process, the project team can review and nominate a resolved environment that best supports the school’s needs.

This can reduce the time spent on briefing, option development, repeated costing and redesign. It also allows important decisions about the outdoor environment to be made earlier, giving the architect, client and consultant team greater certainty as the wider project progresses.

Establish clearer scope and cost expectations

Because Playform is pre-designed and pre-costed, it provides a much clearer basis for early discussion than a generic playspace allowance.

The final project still needs to respond to its site, interfaces and procurement requirements, but the central outcome is already defined. This makes it easier for the architect and client to understand what is being proposed, align expectations and protect the intended quality through later project stages.

Simplify coordination

A school outdoor environment touches multiple parts of the wider design. Location, access, circulation, levels, adjoining landscape, shade, supervision and construction sequencing all influence how successfully it will function.

With Playform, the core environment is resolved and ULP brings design and construction responsibility together. Early coordination with the project team allows the selected Playform to be considered within the site strategy without requiring the architect to become the specialist playspace designer or coordinate a fragmented group of suppliers.

Give the school confidence in the outcome

Architects are often required to help clients make decisions before every detail can be fully developed. A visible, defined Playform gives the school something credible to understand, discuss and progress.

The school is not being asked to approve an abstract allowance or imagine how separate components may eventually work together. It can select a complete environment with a clear design character, purpose and delivery pathway.

How Playform works within an architectural project

Playform is best suited to projects where the architect and school want a high-quality, complete outdoor environment without commissioning a new playspace design from first principles.

The project team selects the Playform that best aligns with the site, school community, intended outcomes and available investment. ULP then confirms its suitability, coordinates the project-specific requirements and supports the formal procurement and delivery pathway.

The selected Playform remains the design foundation. Limited site-specific adjustments and small additions can be considered where appropriate, but the value of the model comes from retaining the integrity of an environment that has already been thoughtfully resolved.

For schools, the pathway is:

Selection > Procurement > Student Workshop > Small additions and future stages > Installation

The Student Workshop takes place once the Playform has been selected and procured. It gives students a meaningful connection to a real project that is moving forward. Student input can inform appropriate small additions and help identify priorities for future stages without reopening the selected design.

When the project needs greater design development

Some school projects require more than the selection and site integration of an existing Playform. The site may form part of a larger campus transformation, require a stronger relationship with the architecture or call for a greater level of project-specific development.

This is the role of Playform+.

Playform+ retains the proven Playform product framework but gives ULP greater freedom to shape the environment around the project. Rather than starting from a blank page, the design is developed using established Playform and Accent building blocks, protecting the efficiencies and confidence of the system while allowing a more tailored response.

For schools, the pathway is:

Student Workshop > Design within the Playform framework > Procurement > Installation

In Playform+, the Student Workshop occurs before design development. It takes a more student-led and design-led role, bringing student insight into the project while there is still meaningful scope to shape the design. ULP then interprets that input alongside the architectural context, school brief, site conditions and project requirements.

Neither option represents a lower standard of design. The distinction is the amount and timing of project-specific development required.

Playform provides the most direct route to a complete environment that has already been resolved. Playform+ is the next step when the project needs more design input while still benefiting from the logic, experience and efficiencies built into Playform.

What remains under the architect’s control?

Nominating Playform does not diminish the architect’s role or disconnect the playspace from the wider project. It provides a specialist, resolved component that can be coordinated within the overall school design.

The architect continues to lead the broader architectural vision, site planning and consultant coordination. ULP takes responsibility for the Playform environment and works with the project team to address the interfaces that affect its successful integration and delivery.

For Playform+, the relationship becomes more collaborative during design development. The architectural context and wider campus strategy can play a greater role in shaping how the Playform framework is applied, while ULP retains specialist design leadership for the outdoor environment.

Does nomination remove procurement or approval requirements?

No. Playform creates a resolved basis for decision-making, coordination and costing, but it does not bypass the procurement, approval or governance requirements that apply to the project.

For NSW public schools, the appropriate Asset Management Unit pathway and applicable procurement thresholds still need to be followed. Independent and Catholic schools may use different approval and procurement processes.

The advantage is that these processes begin with a much clearer definition of the intended environment. The design team, school and approving stakeholders are assessing a complete outcome rather than an undefined allowance.

A specialist outdoor environment without another open-ended design stream

The strongest school projects are resolved as complete environments. Architecture, landscape, learning, movement, play and community life should support one another, not be considered as separate layers at the end of the programme.

Playform gives architects and consultants a practical way to protect that ambition. You can nominate a thoughtfully designed, well-rounded and construction-ready outdoor environment while reducing the time, uncertainty and coordination usually required to create one from first principles.

Where the project calls for greater design development, Playform+ extends the same proven foundation without returning to an entirely bespoke process.

In both cases, the result is a clearer pathway to an outdoor environment that serves the architecture, the school and the students who will experience it every day.
