Playform Student Workshop
Capture student voice. Activate your community.
The people who use a school’s outdoor spaces every day often see possibilities that adults can miss. The Playform Student Workshop gives students a meaningful role in the project, helping us understand how they learn, play, connect and experience their school.
Delivered as part of Playform+, the workshop helps turn a new outdoor project into something the whole school community can understand, support and feel part of. Student insight informs the design process, while the experience builds excitement, pride and a genuine sense of ownership in what comes next.

Designed with students. Led by experts.
Student voice should influence the project without placing the responsibility for design on students.
The workshop gives students an engaging way to share what matters to them about their outdoor environment. Our designers then interpret those insights alongside the school’s vision, priorities and project requirements, using professional judgement to shape a cohesive, purposeful and deliverable design.
Students are heard. The school gains meaningful insight. ULP remains accountable for bringing everything together.
Why student voice matters
Students experience school grounds differently from adults. They notice where friendships form, where play becomes crowded, where they feel comfortable, where they seek challenge and which spaces hold the greatest possibilities.
Listening to those perspectives can reveal needs and opportunities that may not appear in a brief or site plan. It helps us design with a deeper understanding of everyday school life and create an environment that feels relevant to the students who will use it.

What the workshop brings to your project
A better-informed design
First-hand insight from students adds depth to the school brief and helps our designers understand how the outdoor environment is experienced each day.
Genuine student ownership
When students know their ideas have been heard and thoughtfully considered, the finished environment carries greater meaning, pride and connection.
Stronger community support
The workshop gives the school a positive story to share with staff, families and its wider community, helping people understand the purpose behind the project.
Energy and momentum
Participation makes the project feel real. It builds curiosity and excitement, helping the school community look forward to what is being created together.
Insight for the future
Student perspectives can also highlight broader priorities across the campus, helping the school think beyond one project and make more informed decisions about what could come next.
More than consultation
Meaningful engagement is not about asking students to choose a colour or vote for a piece of equipment. It is about listening carefully, recognising the value of their lived experience and giving their perspectives an appropriate place within a professionally led design process.
The result is not a collection of requests. It is a stronger understanding of the outcomes the environment should support, from learning and movement to belonging, social connection and everyday enjoyment.

From student insight to confident design
Following the workshop, ULP considers the student insights together with the school brief, site conditions, budget, supervision, compliance and construction requirements. These perspectives help shape the Playform+ design while responsibility for resolving the final environment remains with our experienced team.
This balance is important. The project benefits from authentic student input without losing the clarity, quality and confidence of an expert-led design and delivery process.
Activate the wider school community
A great school project can do more than improve a physical space. It can create a shared sense of momentum around the school’s future.
The Playform Student Workshop provides a natural point of connection between students, leadership, teachers and families. It helps the school communicate why the project matters, demonstrate that students have been heard and build a stronger sense of collective investment in the outcome.
By the time the new environment opens, it already has a story, a purpose and a community ready to embrace it.

Give students a voice in what comes next
The Playform Student Workshop is available as part of the Playform+ pathway for schools. It brings student insight into the design process while giving your wider community something meaningful to participate in, support and celebrate.
