Landscape Design Workshop for Students

At Urban Landscape Projects, we know the most successful outdoor learning spaces are built with students, not just for them. That’s why we have our Student Design Workshop, a program that involves students in shaping their school grounds and helps them understand the basics of landscape design, sustainability, and teamwork.

Our workshops deliver more than ideas. They strengthen school culture and result in spaces that are genuinely used and cared for by your community.

About the Program

The Student Design Workshop is our unique program that’s built around student involvement, helping them share ideas about the spaces they use daily. More than just an activity, it’s an opportunity for young people to understand the basics of landscape design, sustainability, and community planning in a hands-on way.

Our goal is simple: to help students see that outdoor learning environments aren’t just built for them. They can play a role in creating them. We introduce design thinking at an age where curiosity is high, and shows students how ideas can be turned into real spaces.

Why We Created It

For decades, we’ve learned that the most valued spaces are those that reflect the voices of the community who use them daily.

Teachers, principals, and parents contribute valuable perspectives, but students bring something different: imagination, honesty, and fresh ideas. By involving them early, we create not only better designs but also stronger connections between young people and their environment.

The Student Design Workshop was born out of this philosophy. It’s not about turning every child into a landscape architect. It’s actually about sparking interest, teaching respect for outdoor spaces, and showing how collaboration can shape the world around them.

What Happens During a Workshop

Workshops are tailored for schools but generally follow a simple and engaging structure:

Landscape Design

ULP facilitators introduce basic design concepts like balance, safety, sustainability, and how different zones of a playground serve different needs.

Exploring Ideas

Students brainstorm and sketch what they’d like to see in their outdoor spaces. This may include gardens, quiet areas, play zones, or creative learning corners.

Hands-On Activities

Depending on the age group, students might build small models, map out spaces on paper, or create vision boards with images and materials.

Presentation & Sharing

Students may present their ideas to classmates, teachers, and ULP facilitators. This not only builds confidence but also helps refine the design direction.

From Ideas to Concept

Our designers take student input and translate it into practical concepts. The final design still reflects the school’s needs and compliance standards, but it carries the mark of genuine student participation.
