BRING LEARNING OUTSIDE

The Playform Outdoor learning series

The Outdoor Learning Series is a curated collection of landscape-led learning environments designed to extend education beyond the classroom. Combining outdoor classrooms, gathering spaces, nature-based learning areas and informal teaching settings, each Playform environment is designed to support collaboration, creativity, wellbeing and hands-on exploration within everyday school life. Integrated seating, shade, planting and natural materials create calm, functional spaces that encourage students to learn, connect and engage with the outdoors in a more meaningful way.

The cove

A flexible outdoor gathering space designed for social interaction and informal learning. It creates a calm, multi-functional environment that supports conversation, small group teaching, presentations and everyday student use.

The teaching terrace

A simple, structured outdoor classroom anchored by a raised teaching deck and framed by three linear rows of sandstone seating. A central shade tree defines the teaching edge, creating a natural focal point and providing shade.

Campfire, Cave, Waterhole

A landscape-led outdoor learning environment inspired by David Thornburg’s three archetypal modes of learning. The environment is organised into distinct yet connected learning settings- a formal outdoor classroom, informal social seating, collaborative gathering spaces, and quieter retreat areas for individual learning.

The natural arena

The Natural Arena creates a calm, immersive setting for outdoor teaching, student presentations, group reflection and community gathering. Integrated planting and natural materials connect with the surrounding landscape, creating an outdoor environment grounded in nature.

The reflective garden

A calm, landscape-led environment designed to support reflection, wellbeing, informal learning and quiet social connection within the school setting. Flexible gathering areas and garden-focused outlooks encourage mindfulness, focus and connection to nature, creating a restorative environment that supports both student wellbeing and outdoor learning.

The Sustainable Learning Area (SLA)

A hands-on outdoor learning environment that combines productive gardens, environmental education and flexible teaching spaces within one integrated landscape. The Sustainable Learning Area (SLA) encourages students to engage directly with planting, food production, biodiversity and sustainable systems through hands on learning.

The STEM SLA

An expanded Sustainable Learning Area is designed as an immersive learning landscape. The STEM elements encourage students to observe, test, grow and investigate through direct interaction with the environment, creating a living outdoor classroom that supports inquiry-based learning.

The STEM S.L.A.X.L.

A flagship outdoor learning environment that combines sustainability education, STEM exploration and large-scale outdoor teaching within one immersive landscape. The XL STEM Sustainable Learning Area expands on the core STEM SLA concept with a larger teaching pergola, increased seating capacity, extensive productive gardens and a broader range of hands-on learning opportunities.

The natural reading circle

A calm, nature-based gathering space designed for reading, reflection and group discussion beneath a canopy of shade trees. Its enclosed, garden-like form encourages conversation, curiosity and a strong connection to the natural environment.

Directional reading circle

A nature-based outdoor learning environment designed around the four cardinal directions, subtly introduces orientation, navigation and direction through integrated compass point markers.

Playform Placemaking:
Our student led design workshop

Capture student voice and dliver for your School Community

Our Playform Placemaking Workshops give students a voice in shaping the future of their school grounds while helping schools build a broader campus vision over time. Working collaboratively with students and staff, we identify future activation areas across the school and explore the most suitable Playform spaces for each location. In some cases, smaller additions or refinements to the selected Stage 1 Playform may also emerge through the workshop process, with opportunities for these to be incorporated immediately or planned as future staged upgrades.
